What is it like?

The Bachelor of Business (Accountancy) will allow you to become an accountant with an integrated business perspective. You will gain the skills and confidence to measure the big decisions affecting modern organisations and societies. These are skills that today’s employers seek, both in New Zealand and internationally.

Become an excellent communicator

You will develop your ability to identify and communicate information important to organisations. The programme will help you make financial and non-financial judgements from available resources and will develop your interpersonal, computer and business communication skills.

Explore a broad range of business disciplines

This programme has been designed so you can combine a comprehensive range of both accounting and non-accounting courses. You will have some required core accounting courses in your degree, but you will be able to explore the broad range of business courses available at Massey, including marketing, management, economics, finance and valuation and property management.

You will study in a modern and connected environment. You will also have access to networking with industry (prospective employers) through our active social networks. Student groups are key components of the learning experience.

Learn the language of business

The business environment is undergoing radical change, as is the historical role of accountants. Massey’s accountancy programme is led by highly-knowledgeable and research-driven experts. That means your learning is focused on the most recent and relevant disciplinary outcomes. You’ll study in a modern and connected environment with access to our active social groups and networking with industry.

A professional accountancy career?

If you are certain you would like to follow a professional accounting career, you should consider the Bachelor of Accountancy programme as an alternative to the Bachelor of Business (Accountancy).

Sought-after by employers

The Bachelor of Business will give you the leadership, communication and critical thinking skills that will make you a sought-after employee.

You will also gain many skills you can use in many different types of businesses, in New Zealand and around the world. You will be someone that has a sound base in the business fundamentals of accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, law and communication.

Internationally and nationally accredited

The Massey Business School is one of the country’s leading and largest business schools and is AACSB accredited.

Our School of Accountancy has accreditation from national and international professional institutions including the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK). It was also awarded the AACSB accreditation for the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degree programmes.  The School is one of only two institutions in New Zealand and Australia awarded this prestigious accreditation.  Only around 12 other institutions outside the USA have achieved this distinction.

Massey University’s accountancy and finance programme ranks in the 200 universities in the world and our business and management studies are ranked in the top 250 (by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) rankings). We are also ranked in the top 150 universities worldwide for business administration, communication and finance programmes by the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.

Our lecturers are actively researching, bringing the most relevant developments in accounting theory and practice to your study. Massey is ranked third in Australasia and first in New Zealand for accounting research impact and productivity.

Accountant – Ernst & Young

“There are many aspects to Massey that made my tertiary experience significantly better than how I anticipated university study would be…”

Massey lecturers were approachable, easy to have discussions with (in terms of both study and beyond), and they had a lot of wisdom and experience to share. Massey University also provided opportunities to be involved in many extra-curricular activities that enhanced my professional skills. One example was the Palmerston North Community Accounting programme that allowed me to gain ‘working-world’ experience. I was able to apply the knowledge and skills gained in the programme at my summer internship at Ernst & Young (EY), one of the ‘Big 4’ companies. I have now joined EY, Wellington, as an Accountant.

Careers

The accountancy major prepares you primarily for careers in business. However, you may also find opportunities in education, the corporate or public sector, or as a consultant providing business or tax advisory services. An accountancy major can also lead to a career within general management.

Because the major is flexible and gives you the opportunity to concentrate on a particular area of accountancy, career options are numerous depending on the combination of courses you choose to take. Many of our graduates start their careers in accounting but later move into other areas. They are able to take with them the financial and non-financial performance evaluation skills important for senior executives.

BBus graduates with an accountancy major can seek admission to the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, or CPA Australia by completing a number of courses not specifically required in the Bachelor of Business degree. The right course selection also provides graduates with maximum exemptions for ACCA, and exemptions for CIMA. If you would like more information on professional body membership, please contact the School of Accountancy Administrator.

You should seek advice early in your degree programme, because a number of the required courses should be included in your degree as electives.
