What is it like?

The study of chemistry is fun and interesting. Your lecturers in the Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) at Massey University are be passionate and engaging. The topics you will cover are stimulating and relevant to the world today. And the practicals will bring out the enjoyment of making and studying molecules.

Find solutions to global issues

Beyond the classroom, it is an exciting and challenging time for chemistry. Solutions to global challenges such as sustainability, energy supply and health and medicine will all require new materials and molecules. These will be developed by chemists – this qualification will help you learn the skills to have an impact.

For example chemists are developing materials to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, they are developing batteries that use earth-abundant elements and they are investigating magnetic molecules for sustainable computing and quantum computing applications. Chemists work with biologists, physicists and biochemists to design and synthesise new pharmaceuticals for treating cancer and other diseases.

Real-world problem solving

You’ll have the opportunity to work alongside some of our world-recognised researchers on issues of international significance.

You’ll carry out experiments and projects applying fundamental chemistry knowledge to solve real-world problems.

For example, our students have developed new porous materials that can capture carbon dioxide to combat global warming; they have worked with veterinarians to develop new materials for controlled anaesthetic release, they have applied machine-learning methods for fast and accurate spectroscopic analysis of forage feeds and pasture types, and they have built their own scientific instrumentation.

Upon graduating from Massey’s chemistry programme you will be able to apply your fundamental knowledge to challenging global issues. You will develop critical thinking skills, which combined with analytical and problem solving skills and your understanding of the principles of chemistry will allow you to make valuable contributions to public debates on controversies such as climate change, water quality and sustainable use of resources.

Learn the fundamentals

Massey University’s BSc (Chemistry) major will also provide you with an essential foundation in the fundamental principles of chemistry. You will learn fundamental theories of structure of molecules and materials and how structure determines the properties and reactivity of molecules and materials. You will obtain hands-on experience with cutting-edge instrumentation, learn how to synthesise fascinating new compounds and analytical methods that are capable of detecting single molecules.

We have slightly different applications, depending which campus you study on. For instance fundamental principles are applied to modern research and applications in chemical biology, chemical synthesis, materials/nanoscience if you study at Manawatū, whereas they are applied more to computational, environmental and biological chemistry when you study on our Auckland campus.

Combine with other sought-after subjects

Match your degree with a second major or minor (eg in mathematics, environmental science, agricultural science, genetics) to develop a unique blend of skills that will set you apart from the rest.

Get connected

You’ll be well placed to gain connections and experience within industry while studying. Opportunities include summer internships with Crown Research Institutes, connecting with the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry members and employment opportunities with our chemistry department.

Up close and personal with state-of-the-art equipment

You’ll receive training on a range of instruments and learn techniques for molecular analysis, X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance, FTIR, Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, ultra high performance liquid chromatography, gas absorbtion, membrane testing and more.

Internationally recognised

Massey University’s programme is ranked in the top 350 university chemistry programmes in the world by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings.

Earn more

A 2017 Ministry of Education publication The post-study earnings and destinations of young domestic graduates showed that those who complete a qualification in a science, agriculture, technology, computer science, engineering or mathematics field of study have high relative earnings after they complete their study compared to the national median. Earnings can be substantially more than other graduates.
