Entry requirements

You must be selected into the Bachelor of Speech and Language Therapy with Honours Programme in the Institute of Education and have gained entrance to Massey University. Selection, and the subsequent offer of a place in the programme, is determined by the information submitted in your online application and an interview process.

Applications received by the University by 3 February 2020 will be considered for study commencing in Semester One 2020. The closing date for returning students is the same as the general application due dates.

Applications received after this date will be considered but may not be in time to start in 2020. The first part of the selection process involves assessment by academic staff within the Institute of Education. If the selection committee feel you potentially meet the selection criteria, you will be invited to an interview. This is the second part of the selection process. If the interview panel is satisfied that you are a suitable candidate you may be offered a place, depending on available places.

Admission to the Degree of Bachelor of Speech Language Therapy with Honours requires that the candidate will:

  • Meet the University admission requirements as specified, and will:
  • Have achieved 14 credits at NCEA Level 3 or higher in English and 16 credits or more at NCEA Level 3 or higher in one of the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Calculus or Statistics;

and will have:

  • Been selected into the Qualification based on a selection process that may include a written application, interview, and practical exercises;
  • Achieved an IELTS of 7.0 with no band less than 7.0 within the preceding two years if English is not the applicant’s first language.

What documents do you need to supply to support your application?

To support your application, you will need to provide the following documents:

  • A personal supporting statement

In standard written English (or Māori), explain why you chose this programme of study. List any personal characteristics you have that might strengthen your application.

  • School/tertiary institution confidential report, if still at school.
  • Verified copies of academic record

If, since leaving school, you are currently studying or have undertaken study at a polytechnic, university, or other educational organisation.

  • Two referee reports

We require two people who can act as referees for you and who are able to provide informed responses on your personal suitability for the programme. A referee should be someone who has known you for one year or more in the capacity of employer, educator, work colleague or person of community standing, ie Kaumatua, Minister or similar. Your referee should not be a friend, flatmate, relative or someone who has not known you for at least a year. The information your referee supplies is confidential to those involved in the selection process.

  • IELTS test (academic version) results

If you do not hold a University Entrance qualification from an English speaking country or a degree taught in English from an English speaking country, you will need to attach a verified copy of your results. You must score at least 7.0 or higher in all bands of the IELTS test.

  • A curriculum vitae

Please provide a full employment history, as appropriate for your life situation, please include brief details on recent formal and/or informal experiences and/or involvement in the following areas:

  • Experience with children/young adults
  • Community activities
  • School activities
  • Other activities (such as music, drama, art)
  • Exposure to or experience with children or adults with communication and/or swallowing needs.
  • Exposure to or experience with individuals who have health or learning difficulties.
  • Any interactions with or observations of speech-language therapists
  • Other cultures
  • Teaching/tutoring/coaching/mentoring
  • Outdoor education

Please also supply:

  • A completed NZ Police Request and Consent form, along with two pieces of verified identification (one of which must be photographic) from the list of acceptable forms of identification
  • A copy of a police report from every overseas country you have lived in for more 12 months in the last 10 years.

Once you have accepted the offer of a place in the selected entry programme, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences will ensure you are enrolled for the first year of study as outlined in the letter of offer. Once you have been granted entrance and admission to the University your enrolment will be confirmed. Lectures begin 24 February 2020.

In order to progress from Part 1 to Part 2, or Part 2 to Part 3 students must have passed all courses in the preceding Part.

For progression to Part 4 of Bachelor of Speech Language Therapy with Honours, students must have maintained at least a B+ grade average in the Part 3 courses.

Safety checks and disclosure of criminal convictions

  • All applicants are required to undergo a number of safety checks. This includes police vetting (including confirmation of identity) and further checks required under the Vulnerable Children Act 2014, Vulnerable Children Regulations 2015 and the Children’s Action Plan. You will be required to permit the Institute of Education to ask the New Zealand Police to disclose any information held on the Police record system.

Bachelor of Speech and Language Therapy with Honours structure

The Speech-Language Therapy with Honours programme is a four-year full-time internal degree offered within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Study occurs at the Auckland Campus. It is not intended to be a part-time programme. All students may be required to complete clinical placements outside of Auckland. Students are responsible for all of the costs associated with being on clinical placements (e.g., travel, accommodation, serology testing and MRSA screening). Students will also be required to purchase a clinical uniform shirt and a name badge.

The Bachelor of Speech Language Therapy with Honours must be completed with 480 credits and requires:
a) successful completion of courses prescribed in each year (part) of study; and
b) satisfactory performance in clinical practica and collection of a minimum of 200 hours of supervised clinical practice.

In order to progress from Part 1 to Part 2, or Part 2 to Part 3 students must have passed all courses in the preceding Part. For progression to Part 4 of Bachelor of Speech Language Therapy with Honours, candidates must have maintained at least a B+ grade average in the Part 3 courses. Those who do not meet the progression criteria, or who do not wish to progress to Part 4 of the Bachelor of Speech Language Therapy with Honours will be able to enrol in the Bachelor of Speech Language Therapy Part 4 courses. The Degree of Bachelor of Speech Language Therapy with Honours may be awarded with First Class Honours or with Second Class Honours Division I or Second Class Honours Division II or with Third Class Honours. The class of Honours awarded shall be determined by the examiners based on the performance of the candidate in Part 4 of the programme.

Course requirements for the Bachelor of Speech and Language Therapy with Honours must be completed within six years of first enrolment. The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences may extend the time to complete the degree if there are extenuating circumstances.
