“I have always been drawn to the environment and the importance of managing natural resources in a sustainable manner for future generations.”

I lived in Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands as a young child. Living with those local communities I was fascinated with how other indigenous cultures lived in harmony with their natural environment. My family has also worked in the primary sector for generations, so it seemed logical that I wanted to have a career in the natural resource and environmental management sector.

Massey University offered the right mix of tertiary education in natural resource management. It is also world renowned for its research and tertiary qualifications in agriculture, horticulture and forestry which was a big hook for me. I really enjoyed my study experience. I had plenty of support and found it an enriching and stimulating environment.

One of the most positive outcomes of my study was learning more about my identity as Māori. Having spent a large portion of my young life overseas I missed that opportunity. The time I spent studying allowed me to explore and discover more about Maori culture and values.

The qualifications I obtained at Massey were highly sought after by government departments and I believe continues to be even more relevant for those wanting a career in central or local government.

Currently I am a senior policy analyst at the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) in the Local Government Policy Group. Working in policy is exciting; the work we do really shapes New Zealand and our communities for the future. My ambition has no ceiling, I want to go as far as I can in my career and make a positive difference in the work I do.
