As well as meeting the requirements of the structured programme, Doctor of Social Work students as with all other doctoral students, are required to undergo an oral defense and submit a honed research proposal as prerequisites for confirmation of thesis registration. This normally takes place once the course work has satisfactorily been completed.

GRS will send a reminder to the candidate, main supervisor and the Head of Unit two months prior to the due date. The DRC will review the confirmation committee’s report and do one of the following: grant full registration; require the confirmation of registration be deferred for a maximum of 6 months beyond the due-date; or, terminate the candidature. A deferral cannot exceed 6 months from the original due-date. The candidate and academic unit may be required to repeat part or all of the confirmation event. There can only be one deferral.
