Aspects of the Neuropsychological Development and Assessment of New Zealand Children
Neuropsychological development and assessment with typically developing school age children is an under-researched area. Furthermore, the practices of psychologists administering these assessments in New Zealand had not previously been investigated. Ms Ross-McAlpine conducted three research studies to investigate patterns of typical development and to determine current assessment practices of New Zealand psychologists. Two studies were conducted in collaboration with a larger research study through the Centre for Public Health Research. The first study provided clarity around patterns of performance of typically developing children by confirming previous research on age effects in neuropsychological development. The second study was the first to explore neuropsychological ability with National Standards of achievement and identify age patterns within these relationships. Lastly, the third study determined current practices of neuropsychological assessment of New Zealand children. Overall, her findings contribute to the literature on neuropsychological development and the practice of conducting neuropsychological assessments with New Zealand children.
