It's all about relationships: Women managing women and the impact on their careers

Very little is known about the nature of women's hierarchical workplace relationships and the impact these have on their careers. Using narrative inquiry, Ms Hurst found that relationships between women managers and employees had direct and indirect career impacts. In particular, when workplace relationships were negative, women often left the organisation they worked for and accepted sideways backwards career steps, when considered in terms of organisational position. She also found that women had gendered expectations of their women managers. By understanding these relationships, and the personal, organisational and societal contexts within which they are situated, Ms Hurst's research developed a holistic and relational framework aimed at strengthening relationships between women in the workplace. Her research adds to the discussion on the ways in which individuals and organisations can better support the hierarchical relationships between women as part of the promotion of workplace gender equity
