Disseminating Your Publications and Research Through Social Media

What are Social Media?

Social media are websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking e.g. Facebook, Twitter, blogs, LinkedIn. This includes academic collaboration platforms like Academia.edu and ResearchGate.

Why Social Media?

Social media helps publicise your research beyond the usual channels of scholarly communication. Using these networks speeds up the research communication process, helps you to find partners for collaboration, and exposes your research to a broader community.

Which Networks?

A variety of networks exist, both those that are general and those that are focused on the scholarly community.  If your research community prefers a particular network or site, then going where the crowd is may reach the largest audience.

You can:

  • Share your publications and track their usage
    Share your publications (within copyright allowances) through networks like ResearchGate, Academia.edu, Mendeley
    Promote your publications and then track their usage on social media networks using altmetrics
  • Promote your research work and interests
    Promote your research work and interests in more detail by setting up a research-oriented blog. If you choose to allow it, readers can make comments on your postings and contribute to discussions
  • Share your work and research process in short summaries
    Share your work and research process in short, 280-character summaries using Twitter. If you decide to promote your research work through Twitter, consider using a different account from your personal Twitter account
  • Upload videos and presentations
    Upload videos of your conference presentations, interviews, and talks to sites like YouTube, Slideshare, and Vimeo

Take a serious look at the services each product offers before you make a decision to use the product.

Remember to consider your researcher identity carefully as you engage with social media.


Read carefully the Terms of Service for any social media product before you engage with it. This is especially important if you intend to upload an entire article, chapter, or paper.

You must also consider the copyright transfer agreement that you have with your publisher regarding social media dissemination.
