Frequently asked questions about hosting interns

How many interns can my organisation host?

The number of interns at each site depends on your capacity, the availability of qualified interns, and the nature of the work to be done.  In most cases, we recommend you host a pair of interns, if possible. Past hosts and interns say that both the organisation and the interns benefit from working in pairs.

How are the interns prepared for their placements prior to arrival?

Massey University arranges a pre-arrival online orientation and an in-person orientation to help prepare the interns. Hosts are asked to provide a placement description to help inform the intern about the organisation and the internship. Interns are told to contact their hosts as soon as their placements have been confirmed.  We encourage hosts and interns to arrange online meetings to discuss the placement, answer questions, and clarify expectations prior to starting the internship.  

What can I expect of my intern?

The internship provides students with an opportunity to put into practice in a New Zealand work context what they have learned from their studies at their home university. We match their capacities and expectations with your requirements.  You should expect an intern who has some professional skills, an academic background relevant to your organisation, and is capable of undertaking work at your site.  You will receive more details about your inter(s) academic and professional background once your placement has been finalised.

When will the internship take place?

Internship periods in each of our tracks take place during various times throughout the Northern Hemisphere summer holiday.

Communication and Marketing:  22 June – 17 July 2020
Disaster Risk and Emergency Management:  29 June – 24 July 2020

Are there costs to my organisation?

You are not expected to pay interns.  You are required to provide specialist or safety equipment and clothing as you would for an employee if the role requires it.  Staff time for inducting and supervising interns is an indirect cost associated with hosting interns.

When will I meet my intern?

Internships start in June and July, but you can expect to be contacted via email by your intern at least a month prior to their start date in your organisation.

Previous hosts have found it very useful to arrange online meetings such as through Skype or Zoom before their intern departs their home country. Emails and Skype conversations will give you an opportunity to get to know your intern a little better, talk about possible tasks or projects and provide any information that will help your intern adjust quickly to work in your organisation.  

What sort of work can I provide?

The work interns undertake can be part of your organisation’s usual activities or a specific project developed for the internship.  It should be a meaningful job to make use of their skills and bring them into regular contact with other people in your workplace.

How many hours can I expect the intern to work?

Inters are available for between 30-35 hours during the daytime Monday to Friday. It would be preferable if the work you provide is spread evenly across days, although other arrangements can be negotiated.  Working remotely is discouraged as the internship is a valuable opportunity for students to experience New Zealand's workplace culture.
