Waikato, March 2015

In March 2015, Wildbase Oil Response Research Officer, Graeme Finlayson, attended a field exercise in Waikato.

The location

Waikato Scenario The exercise was conducted to test the Waikato Marine Oil Spill Team with a full field deployment. The aim as a result of the exercise was to produce an Incident Action Plan (IAP) deploy field equipment and test critical sites from the Waikato Tier 2 regional plan, particularly for a wildlife response.

The process

All briefings were held in the field and wildlife response options were incorporated into the IAP after careful consideration from the information provided as an input into the exercise. The exercise was well attended, including Waikato regional council wildlife representative Megan Dredge.

Results

The exercise highlighted the need to test regional plans, particularly the details for regional facilities that may be required for an oiled wildlife response.

The regional wildlife response kit or ‘Blue Box’, deployed for the exercise on the Waikato River.
