Referencing Software

The software and tools on this page help with managing references. This ranges from providing similar examples, creating references to copy and paste, through to automatically inserting references into your documents and keeping a large library of references and associated PDFs for use in the future.

Tip Remember:

  • Use the style required in your course material
  • Check Massey's OWLL Referencing page, Academic Q+A Stream forum, or another guide for help with standard styles such as APA
  • Enter accurate information into referencing tools - they don't correct errors
  • Know your style well - check all of your references carefully and edit if needed

What do you need from referencing software/tools?

Choose suitable tools from below, based on what your needs are. 

Examples of references

Good for: creating a few references yourself based on similar examples; becoming familiar with and checking the correct style

Arrow OWLL APA Interactive, Chicago Interactive and MLA Interactive create examples of each style's references

Arrow Quickcite creates examples of APA, Chicago, MLA and ACS style references (from the University of Auckland)

Create references

Good for: creating a few machine-generated references (you should check/edit these carefully); copying & pasting references into your documents; some also create reference lists

Arrow Discover, Google Scholar and some other Library databases create references in several styles, using the ‘Cite’ button in each item record

Arrow ZoteroBib creates references and builds reference lists. A simplified version of full Zotero, suitable for a few references.

Arrow Microsoft Word has a Citations & Bibliography function. Instructions are available within Word, or on Microsoft's add a citation and create a bibliography.

Full reference management software

Good for: managing many references and associated PDFs; exporting from databases; storing for future use; inserting in-text citations and reference lists

Arrow EndNote reference management software creates, stores and manages references. It is on the Library and computing lab computers, is free to download for Massey students and staff, and is supported by Massey Library.

Arrow Mendeley is a reference manager and academic social network.

Arrow Zotero helps to collect, organize, cite, and share research sources. It is good for non-academic and multimedia sources as well as traditional scholarly references and sharing groups of references with collaborators. Massey Library provides limited support, particularly at Wellington Library.  Zotero Guide (2,103 KB)
