What Services are Provided?

When you are studying from a distance, it is important to plan ahead. Allow plenty of time, in case the materials and/or the help you need is not immediately available.

How the Distance Library Service can help:

  • Books: We deliver course-related books to your home and we pay the return postage (within New Zealand only) for the books we send out.  Note: Students are expected to purchase compulsory textbooks. The Library purchases limited copies of compulsory textbooks and cannot guarantee that a copy will be available to borrow.
  • Articles: We will send you electronic copies of articles held in print only and we can help you access our online articles.
  • Copying: We will send you electronic copies of chapters of books not available for loan.  Note: The Library must comply with The Copyright Act (1994) which restricts the amount that can be copied to a "reasonable proportion". More information and resources about Copyright are available online.
  • Exam Papers: You can access these online through Discover. More information and instructions are available on our Examination Papers page. If you need assistance to download them, please contact us.
  • Help with Finding information: To get you started, we have information on our How do I find ...? page.  Please contact us if you'd like more help and advice on how to search. In some circumstances, we may be able to do a brief search for you to get you started.

Handy hints for distance students

Keeping track of what you have out and when they are due back is important if you want to avoid overdue fines and penalties.

  • Add our email address (library@massey.ac.nz) to your safe senders list.
  • Read any notices we send you. We send courtesy reminders before items are due back, as well as overdue notices.
  • Check your MyLibrary account regularly. You can also use MyLibrary to renew your items, and check your due dates.
  • Keep your postal address up-to-date with Massey University, via the Student Homepage login. Note:Please also let the Library know if you are making book requests on the same day that you have updated your postal address via the Student Homepage login, as your address is not updated with the Library until the following working day. 
  • The due date is when the item must be back at the Library, not when it should be posted.
  • Allow 3-4 working days for return postage.
  • Pay attention to Recalls. If you are a postgraduate student sometimes we have to ask for things back earlier than they were originally issued for. We will always email/post you a notice to let you know and you will have a new due date of not less than 15 days from the date of issue.
  • If you are going away, please return all Library books before you go, or arrange for someone to regularly check your mail (so they can return a recalled item on your behalf).

If your record is blocked at any stage (for overdue books and/or fines), we will hold any requests for 5 days while we notify you and to allow you to resolve the issue.

Delivery of materials

Note: An Address Redirection with NZPost does not apply to CourierPost parcels.

Please let us know immediately if you have moved as we send your requests out via CourierPost.  Delivery is overnight to most cities, sometimes longer if you live in a Rural Delivery (RD) area. You will need to ensure the courier driver has access to a safe place to leave your books.

If you are having difficulty or issues with delivery/return of materials at any time, please contact us as soon as possible. If we are aware of the situation, we can most likely do something to help.

Returning Books to the Library

Please post your books back at least 3 working days before the due date.

Books are returned to us using the NZPost ParcelPost Returns service.

  • Recycle the CourierPost bag by turning it inside out (so it is "grey" on the outside) as this will save you time and money.
  • If you choose to use your own packaging, make sure the packaging is robust, and do not use staples to secure your parcel.
  • Use the Freepost label supplied or you can print more using this template:

  • Attach the label securely, take the parcel to a Post Shop and it will come back to us at no cost to you.
  • Alternatively, you can return your books in person to any Massey University campus library by their due date.

Please do not include any correspondence or payments with the books, as these are processed by another section in the Library.
